Last Christmas, along with the illustrator Fran Parreño and the animator Fran Solo, we created various animations for the classical ballet "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky. The videos were projected onto a cinema screen at the Teatro Real de Madrid while the orchestra played live, for a program dedicated to families with children called El Real Junior. There were a total of four performances during December 2022 and January 2023.
I mainly took care of the backgrounds and objects, while Fran Parreño handled all the characters. It was quite a challenge to combine my digital technique with his clean watercolors. The result was vivid and colorful illustrations with a moody Christmas atmosphere, that became alive with Fran Solo's work.
I really enjoyed decorating the living room, which needed to be contemporary yet universal. I decided to create wallpaper, a wooden floor, and a fireplace to evoke a warm and nostalgic atmosphere without reverting to the 19th century, where most of the ballets are set. I had fun camouflaging a portrait of Tchaikovsky among other paintings.
